How is linen fabric made? What kind of fabric is linen?

The term linen is often used as a synonym for woven textiles. However, linen is actually a fiber material that is processed into a wide variety of textiles such as knits, weaves, nonwovens, or crochet.

Woven linen fabrics are textile yard goods that consist of a warp thread system and a weft thread system. The warp and weft are woven together vertically to create a textile structure, the weave.

The most important basic weave types in the textile industry are:

  • Plain weave
  • Twill weave
  • Satin weave

Derived weave types, such as complex patterned weaves, are based on these three basic weave types.

If you are specifically interested in pure linen, you will find a selection of various pure linen fabrics by the meter there.

Why is woven linen so popular?

Linen has various properties that make the material interesting for numerous textile applications. The fiber is processed into yarns and can subsequently be turned into different textiles and weaves.

The linen fiber is absorbent and tear-resistant. It can absorb moisture and is frequently used for summer clothing and various home textiles due to its material properties.

Depending on the design and care, linen textiles can be used over a long period of time. The properties a specific fabric possesses depend, among other things, on the fiber composition, the weave, the weight, and the finishing of the respective material.

Types of linen fabric

What is thick linen fabric called, what is thin linen fabric called? These questions reach us again and again. There are various types of thick and thin linen fabrics, examples of which are presented below with their technical terms.

Thin linen fabrics

Thin linen fabrics are fabrics made with fine yarns. They are particularly suitable for women's outerwear and summer clothing. As curtains, depending on the weave and design, they can create a transparent or translucent look.

Thick and heavy linen fabrics

Thick linen fabrics include:

  • Canvas
  • Denim
  • Damask
  • Panama
  • Twill

Heavy and thick qualities are suitable for upholstery work, pillows, and other decorations, as well as for clothing that is subject to more wear and tear.

Often the transition from thin to thick linen fabrics is fluid. We recommend paying attention to the item descriptions of our fabrics. In addition to product recommendations for sewing and design, we have provided the respective square meter weight of the fabrics for you.

When choosing the right fabric, the texture of the linen weave plays an important role in addition to the gsm weight. Linen generally has a typical linen texture, where the yarns are woven into the fabric with slight thickenings. This structure is highly valued and is characteristic of many linen fabrics.

Both coarse textures – such as our rustic linen – and finer textures – such as our fine linen – are available.

Working with linen fabrics correctly

Before processing, it is possible to pre-wash the fabric. However, you can also include an allowance for residual shrinkage, i.e., the possible shrinking of the fabric due to washing.

When dimensioning your curtains, for example, it is advisable to incorporate a length allowance for the hem in order to keep a reserve of length after the first wash.

If you would like to pre-wash the fabric, it is recommended to finish the open fabric edges beforehand with a sewing machine.

A rotary cutter or sharp scissors are suitable for cutting. The desired pattern should be pinned and marked with tailor's chalk if necessary.

For sewing, it is important to set up the machine for the linen material being used. For light, thin fabrics, we recommend a universal needle. For heavy, firm linen qualities, a jeans needle is suitable.

How do I wash linen fabrics?

Most linen fabrics from our assortment can be washed in the machine at at least 30 degrees Celsius. After washing, we recommend hanging the goods to dry.

For some items, you can also put the fabric in the dryer to dry. Ironing is possible in a dry state at a light to medium setting.

Our upholstery fabrics are cleaned with a damp cloth or a brush. For precise information, we also refer here to the respective care instructions for the fabric.
