How are upholstery fabrics made?
How is upholstery fabric made? Upholstery fabric is a fabric that is made in various weaves (e.g. plain weave, twill weave or satin weave). Upholstery fabric is made from various raw materials, for example natural fibers such as cotton, hemp, wool or linen and sometimes mixed with or made entirely from synthetic fibers. Synthetic fibers such as polyester are often used to ensure the durability of the upholstery fabric. Here we offer great sustainable fabrics made from recycled PET or cotton fibers. For outdoor and indoor use, upholstery fabrics can be additionally impregnated or coated to positively modify the material properties. This makes the upholstery fabric water and dirt repellent, particularly resistant to pests and flame retardant.
What special properties do upholstery fabrics have?
What properties and quality features does an upholstery fabric have? In the chapter on production, it was shown that upholstery fabric is flame-retardant, water- and dirt-repellent and/or resistant to pests when specially treated. Upholstery fabric is also particularly robust, abrasion-resistant, tear-resistant and lightfast due to the weave and the yarns used.
One of the most important indicators for upholstery fabrics is the Martindale test method, which indicates the abrasion resistance of upholstery fabrics in abrasion cycles.
The benchmark is approximately:
- 15,000 Martindale for private use
- 30,000 Martindale for office use
- >30,000 Martindale for public transport
Lightfastness is another quality feature for upholstery fabrics and describes the resistance of the colors used in the fabric to the effects of light.
The scale below sets a benchmark:
- Lightfastness 8: excellent
- Lightfastness 7: excellent
- Lightfastness 6: very good
- Lightfastness 5: good
- Lightfastness 4: fairly good
- Lightfastness 3: moderate
- Lightfastness 2: low
- Lightfastness 1: very low
We have included the corresponding abrasion resistance and lightfastness of our upholstery fabrics in the item description for you. There is a good reason why we often use polyester fibers for our upholstery fabrics, because this fiber material makes it possible to weave fabrics that offer the necessary durability and longevity that corresponds to the end use and our idea of sustainability.

Upholstery fabrics in modern and classic colours
The right combination of colors is important. Which color goes best with your furniture in the living room, dining room or bedroom? Should it be soft pastel shades in pink, yellow or green? Are you looking for a colorful eye-catcher that draws attention to your self-designed sewing project in the room? A fine mix of complementary colors such as blue and yellow or red and green are also important elements in interior design. Or can you use one of the classic upholstery fabric colors such as cream, beige, gray, terracotta or brown?
We have a selection of different combinations ready for you. It is important to choose the right balance of different colors and to integrate your sewn product appropriately into the environment.
What do you have to consider when cutting upholstery fabrics?
There are a few points to consider, which we will explain below.
Upholstery fabrics are not easy to cut due to their robustness. As with most fabrics, you should pay attention to the grain and, if necessary, the pattern and the respective pattern repeat when pinning the cut pieces. It is best to use a thimble to push your needles through the fabric if you have a particularly strong upholstery fabric. The surface should be marked and cut to size using either good scissors or a rotary cutter. If the fabric is relatively thick, a sharp cutting tool should be used so that cutting the fabric is not unnecessarily difficult.
What do you have to consider when sewing upholstery fabrics?
Upholstery fabric is easy to sew if you use the right needle and sewing foot. Due to the thickness of the material, we recommend that you use a jeans needle with a thickness of 90 to 110 in the machine. We also recommend a durable sewing thread, as the thread is guided through a tightly woven fabric weave.
Care tips for upholstery fabrics
Wash
Have you decided on an upholstery fabric? When determining the best way to care for upholstery fabric, it is important to first consider what kind of product you have made. Bags and backpacks made of untreated upholstery fabric are robust, but can be susceptible to stains. Before washing, it is advisable to clean the fabric with a dirt eraser or a damp sponge. This is often enough to remove stains from the upholstery fabric.
This also applies to upholstery fabrics that you have used for furniture and upholstery work, as these are often inseparably connected and therefore not suitable for the washing machine.
Coated upholstery fabrics, on the other hand, are water-repellent and dirt-repellent and not particularly susceptible to stains. In these cases, cleaning with a damp cloth is sufficient.
As a rule, upholstery fabrics can be washed gently in the washing machine. To do this, select a wool wash cycle and use the appropriate wool or delicate detergent. The washing temperature should not exceed 30°C and excessive spinning should be avoided in order not to negatively affect the appearance of the upholstery fabric.
dry
After washing, you can hang the upholstery fabric to dry or lay it out on terry cloth or another absorbent surface to allow the material to dry smoothly. Most upholstery fabric is not suitable for tumble drying.
Iron
If necessary, upholstery fabric can be ironed at a low temperature. The temperature basically depends on the material composition. Pure cotton or linen is ironed at a slightly higher temperature than, for example, material mixtures of cotton and synthetic fibers. If in doubt, look at the information on our material composition and the technical data for our fabrics, which will give you information on how to care for our products.
