How is linen fabric made? What kind of fabric is linen?

The term linen is often used as a synonym for woven textiles. However, linen is a fiber material that is used in a wide variety of textiles such as knits, wovens, fleeces or knitted fabrics.

Woven linen fabrics are textile fabrics by the meter that consist of a warp thread and a weft thread system. The warp and weft are woven vertically together to create a textile structure, the fabric. The important basic fabric types in the textile sector are:

  • Plain weave
  • Twill weave
  • Atlas binding

Derivative types of fabric, for example elaborate pattern weavings, are based on the three types of base fabric mentioned.

Why is woven linen so popular?

Linen has various properties that make the material so popular. Linen has the advantage that it is grown in cold to temperate zones, including Europe. This allows fiber materials to be grown and processed locally, creating real added value in terms of the ecological footprint.

Linen also has excellent material properties that have made it one of the most popular fibers in the world. It is very easy to care for and durable. Linen products can be washed and ironed at high temperatures. The fiber is very absorbent and tear-resistant. Linen absorbs moisture from the air and therefore naturally cools you down in summer.

Linen fabric types

What is thick linen fabric called, what is thin linen fabric called? These questions come to us again and again. There are different types of thick and thin linen fabrics, which are exemplified below with their technical terms:

Thin linen fabrics

  • poplin
  • batiste
  • Voile

Thin linen fabrics are fabrics made with fine yarns. They are particularly suitable for women's outerwear and summer clothing. As curtains with a transparent look, they brighten up the living room.

Thicker linen fabrics include:

  • Canvas
  • denim
  • damask
  • Panama
  • Twill

Heavy and thick qualities are suitable for upholstery work, cushions and other decorations, as well as for clothing that is subject to heavy use.

The transition from thin to thick linen fabrics is often smooth. We recommend reading the item descriptions of our fabrics. In addition to product recommendations for sewing and designing, we have stored the respective square meter weight of the fabrics for you.

When choosing the right fabric, in addition to the QM weight, the texture of the linen fabric also plays an important role. Linen usually has a typical linen texture in which the yarns are woven into the fabric with slight thickening. This structure is particularly valued and makes a real linen fabric. Both coarse textures - such as our farmer's linen - and finer textures - such as our fine linen - are available.

In addition to the type of fabric, our linen fabrics differ according to pattern types. We offer styles from retro and vintage to the trends currently available on the market. Our fabrics are woven on classic dobby looms or using the multi-faceted jacquard technique.

In addition to our plain and striped linen fabrics - which are wonderful for combining with our patterned linen fabrics - we offer a unique selection of different designs in this area. Our patterns are woven into the fabric, embroidered or printed onto the linen fabric using various processes.

Our range includes high-quality animal motifs such as owl, hedgehog, deer, butterfly, penguin, rabbit or fox. We also offer great printed and woven patterns with floral elements such as flowers, roses and leaves in a modern country house style or in combination with classic ornaments. Shabby chic with its elegant used look brings its very own style elements and geometric cube patterns in black and white as well as graphic zig zag designs characterize our modern fabric selection. Fantastically soft linen fabrics with dots or checked prints are also available from us.

What are the trend colors for 2022?

Back to nature and therefore to yourself is the new trend. This is reflected in the earthy tones of ochre, beige, gray and brown. But fresh colors such as light yellow, olive green, apricot, elegant white or a creamy green also play a role this year. Various shades of blue in light and dark as well as pink, red, petrol, turquoise and violet provide modern accents in your design. Overall, the style becomes more individual. Our linen fabrics in elegant orange tones are particularly beautiful and are ideal for decorating and upholstering.

What to sew from linen fabric?

As inspiration for our linen fabrics, we have always provided a selection of decoration ideas for the individual items.

Since there are countless things that can be made from linen fabrics, here is a small selection: Linen is used wherever a special feel and an elegant, natural look are required. Our linen fabrics are often used for curtains, tablecloths, quilts and decorations. In the area of clothing, the materials are particularly suitable for sewing shirts, trousers, skirts, dresses or traditional costumes.

Process linen fabrics

Before processing it is possible to pre-wash the fabric. However, you can also include an allowance for the residual shrinkage (shrinkage of the fabric through washing) of the material. When sizing your curtains, for example, it is advisable to add a length allowance over the hem in order to have a reserve length after the first wash. If you want to pre-wash the fabric, we recommend finishing the open edges with a sewing machine.

A rotary cutter or sharp scissors are suitable for cutting. The desired pattern must be marked out and, if necessary, marked with tailor's chalk.

When sewing, it is important to set up the machine for the linen material used. We recommend a universal needle for light, thin fabrics; a jeans needle is suitable for heavy, solid linen materials.

How do I wash linen fabrics?

You can machine wash most of the linen fabrics in our range at at least 30 degrees Celsius. After washing, we recommend hanging the item up to dry. For some items, you can also put the fabric in the dryer to dry. Ironing is possible when dry at a light to medium setting. Our high-quality upholstery fabrics are cleaned with a damp cloth or brush. For detailed information, please refer to the respective care information for the fabric.
