Jacquard is a special weaving technique on a specially developed weaving machine, on which the pattern was generated with punch cards and harness threads in the early days of this textile technique (around 1805). The type of weaving and the loom make jacquard qualities a unique textile design product.

Who or what is Jacquard? A jacquard fabric named after the French weaver Joseph-Marie Jacquard or the jacquard fabric / the jacquard fabric is created through a very high-quality and complex weave in the weaving mill. A fabric itself consists of two thread systems that are woven perpendicular to each other. In the longitudinal direction these are the warp threads and in the transverse direction these are the so-called weft threads. A woven pattern is created by the raising and lowering of various warp threads, through which the weft thread is inserted in the weaving process. Basically, two types of tissue formation can be distinguished here:

1. shaft fabric
2. Jacquard fabric

When it comes to shaft fabric, there is a limitation in the pattern of the fabric because the warp threads are always grouped together and the number of shafts on a weaving machine is limited for technical reasons. Dobby fabrics are therefore available on the market with light patterns such as stripes or checks and as plain fabrics.

How is jacquard fabric made?

Jacquard makes it possible to lift each warp thread individually under computer control, creating very complex and elegant patterns. The warp threads are lifted by harness threads. Each warp thread is assigned to an individual harness thread and guided through the strand containing thread on the harness.

You can always recognize jacquard fabrics by their very elaborate patterns or by the negative image of the pattern on the back. A few decades later, patterning devices for knitting and knitting machines were also constructed based on the Jacquard principle.

What is a jacquard pattern? Various pattern techniques can be implemented with jacquard weaving. You can find some important patterns of the jacquard technique below:

ornament

Ornament means: “decorate, adorn, arrange, equip” and stands for a mostly repeating, often abstract or abstracted pattern with a symbolic function in itself. Each ornament differs significantly from the background pattern and is often differentiated by color or elevation.

brocade

Brocade means: “to work through”. Brocade is generally understood to be a heavy, solid and patterned textile fabric made of silk or rayon into which gold or silver threads are woven (gold or silver brocade). However, the term originally stood for a brocaded or lanced fabric in which the additional decorative weft thread is made of a different material than the basic weft.

gobelin

Gobelin can be traced back to a hand-weaving tapestry technique used by the Gobelin family. The jacquard fabric uses a basic and binding warp and multiple weft systems. In warp tapestry the pattern is formed by colored warp threads, in weft tapestry by colored weft threads.

Paisley

The paisley pattern is a development from the stylized plant pattern seen on Indian shawls of the 17th and 18th centuries. The Scottish town of Paisley produced cashmere scarves with this pattern in the 19th century and thus became synonymous with Paisley design.

The abstract pattern consists of a leaf with a curved end. The pointed end bends back in towards the inside of the leaf. There are often additional patterns such as points, waves and/or other smaller paisley patterns incorporated into the sheet and around the edges. Paisley patterns often consist of many different colors.

Herringbone pattern

The herringbone pattern or herringbone pattern (herringbone for short) is a textile pattern and is reminiscent of herringbones placed several times next to each other. The tissue patterning is created by using the broken body. Within the pattern repeat of a twill weave, the direction of the ridge is changed, usually within the indentation of the warp, and offset by a binding point (twill rearrangement).
